Dick D'alessio - Executive Director for Community Living Stormont County
Dick D'Alessio
My name is Dick D'Alessio, I am the Executive Director for Community Living Stormont County. We provide a caring welcome to people with intellectual disabilities. We have trained staff who will help you find what you need.

Our office provides the services you need to enjoy life to the fullest. Whether it’s a job, a circle of friends, a place to live, or education. We look forward to meeting you, your family and your friends.

The Ontario government's Ministry of Community and Social Services announced in 2004, that Ontario's remaining three large institutions housing people who have an intellectual disability would close by March 2009. This announcement came as welcome news to Community Living. For many years we have advocated for the right for people to live and be supported in the community where they belong.

At the time of the announcement, more than 1,000 people were housed in the three institutions that remain open in the province. Some have begun moving back into the community, with the final moves taking place before March of 2009.

At the time when most of the people with intellectual disabilities were admitted to these large institutions, their families or the community did not have the resources to keep them at home or living in their community. Today, although many community supports exist, few individuals or family members know they have a choice about where they live.

The benefits of living in a community include:
Individualized support based on their needs and wishes.
An opportunity for development and participation in community activities.
More self-reliance and independence - some get jobs or perform volunteer work
People can live in their hometown, be closer to family members and friends

This is not a new initiative - it is the culmination of a policy begun in the mid-1980s and unanimously endorsed by successive governments of all political parties in Ontario. In many provinces and places around the world, institutions have been closed in favour of community services.

Community Living associations like Stormont, Glengarry and Dundas, have been leaders in supporting people who have returned to their communities. We combine qualified and professional staff with a strong network of community based supports. We are confident that most people leaving institutions will experience a higher quality of life in the community.

We encourage you to call us to see if there is a home for you or a family member with Community Living Stormont.
